Title: Head Custodian

Reports to : Principal

Terms of Employment: 12 months

Salary: Pay Grade __ Cust12-$16.32

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

  

An employee in this class serves as a crew leader supervising the activities of custodians and maintenance workers engaged in housekeeping and grounds maintenance work.  Duties include overseeing the general cleaning of facilities which includes: vacuuming, moping and waxing floors, mowing grass, and grooming and planting shrubbery.  Duties require the application of knowledges and skills learned on the job, and require diplomacy and tact in directing the activities of subordinate employees. Work assignments are usually performed independently and require considerable independent judgment and initiative in completing tasks efficiently. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated on the basis of compliance with work orders and the efficient and effective utilization of materials, equipment and labor.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Supervises the activities of a crew of custodians and maintenance workers engaged in general housekeeping and grounds maintenance work. Maintains and completes time sheets. Reviews work of subordinates to ensure quality and completeness.
  • Serves as liaison to central maintenance. Reports major breakdowns and needs for repair.
  • Mows grass, plants trees, bushes, shrubs grasses and other plants. Assures that landscaping projects are performed in accordance with pre-established specifications or contracts.
  • Maintains, by way of pruning, weeding and cutting, etc.; trees, bushes, shrubs grasses and other plants.
  • Keeps streets, roads and pathways clean and free of natural debris.
  • Receives and is responsible for the completion of assigned work orders.
  • Determines the need for feeding/watering plants and performs or assigns as necessary.
  • Operates light to medium sized motorized equipment.
  • Operates a variety of hand and specialty tools associated with the landscaping trade fields.
  • Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture.
  • Sweeps, strips, mops and vacuums floor surfaces.
  • Waxes and buffs tile and wood floors.
  • Cleans restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary.
  • Cleans windows, walls, wood work and light fixtures.
  • Empties trash receptacles.
  • Makes minor repairs to fixtures; replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Performs related tasks and all other duties as assigned by the principal.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • Graduation from high school. 5 years experience in custodial and grounds maintenance work. Some experience in a lead worker or crew leader preferred; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance and landscaping
  • Considerable knowledge of cleaning procedures and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment used in grounds maintenance and custodial work.
  • Ability to use motorized machinery, power and hand tools and cleaning supplies effectively.
  • Ability to perform duties in a lead worker capacity to assure custodial/grounds work is performed properly.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work.
  • Ability to supervise the activities of un-skilled and semi-skilled workers engaged in manual tasks.
  • Ability to complete basic activity reports, time sheets and work order completion reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, subordinates and supervisors.
  • Required to obtain a CDL and Bus License.
  • Required to serve as a substitute bus driver and/or regular bus route driver.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Must be able to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must have visual acuity to operate equipment used in grounds maintenance work and custodial activities including push and riding mowers, heavy floor cleaning equipment and various hand and power tools.
